September 13, 2003
The guild met on Saturday, September 13 with 11 people present, including a potential new member, Barbara--welcome!--and Karen, Gail, Marion, Pat, Nancy, Edie, Maggie, Irene, Penny, and Suzanne.
During the business part of the meeting, we discussed final plans for the Millenium Garden workshop, which was to be held the following week.
Another topic of discussion was the election of the guild's officers, scheduled for January 2004. Officers Edie, Maggie, Suzanne, Kay, Kathy, and Gail were elected in 2002 for a two-year term. Kathy's schedule no longer allows her to attend Saturday meetings, so we've taken turns performing the secretary's duties. Irene has continued in her role as Webmistress throughout the guild's history.
Officers are critical to the life of the guild, arranging for meeting space, maintaining and building the library, planning demos and special events, and managing the guild's finances. These are important duties, but they're a lot
of fun, too! As an officer, you can take an active role in shaping the guild's future--a very creative and rewarding process. Please think seriously about whether you'd like to serve as an officer or whether there's someone you'd like to nominate.
Everyone agreed that it's been too long since the guild had a real swap. We discussed what we could make to swap, and we decided on fish beads. It should be a lot of fun, and we'll all get some cool beads out of the deal, too! I hope you're all thinking fishy thoughts.
Maggie demonstrated a cool technique for making faux raku objects. We all tried our hand at "painting and powdering" clay objects we had baked in advance of the meeting. It was a lot of fun, and people went home with some beautiful things.
Nancy told us that she would be attending a raku enamel class at the Campbell School the following weekend, so she'll have some exciting things to show and tell us next month!
Our newest member, Karen, asked a question about bead rollers, so Edie promised to bring in one that her husband made to show all of us.
Reminder of upcoming meetings: October will focus on crafts we enjoy other than polymer clay. In November we'll make or decorate tools. If we meet in December, we'll have our annual holiday-ornament swap.
The challenge for October is to make something related to autumn. October is a sale/swap month. In keeping with our "other crafts" theme for the October meeting, you can bring non-pc-related craft items to sell or swap this time (as well as pc, of course).
