Meeting Report

May 10, 2003

Julia Sober Class Status:
So far only 8 paid classes. May 29th is the deadline for a minimum of 20 paid between the two classes or they will have to be cancelled. Plans were made to send out notes and "rally" for more paid registrations by the 29th. It would be a shame to have to cancel.

Grovewood Gallery:
Open House is July 5th 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM The Guild has been invited again this year to participate in sales and in the demo area. The sales space allotted is 10 feet x 10 feet. 15% of the group sales will go to Grovewood with a maximum of $250.00 An additional 3% is deducted if the customer uses a credit card. The guild will also take a percentage of the sale for fundraising. (to be reviewed from last year and determined) Grovewood will provide lunch for up to 5 people from the group. Members present voted to accept the invitation to participate in the open house.

Kathy volunteered her tent which was used last year. Booth "furniture" is needed for displays. The need for consistent table coverings was discussed and Jan is to check on some fabric on sale. Edie will also pursue the possibility of having our demos close to our booth instead of in the "general" demo area. Edie has also graciously volunteered to take items for individuals who cannot attend. All members are encouraged to provide work for display only and/or for sale to promote the guild. Maggie and Edie have both said they will be available to work. Others are also encouraged to volunteer for 2 hour shifts. Two will be needed to work at the booth and 1 demonstrating. Grouping each individual's work together with small signs was discussed. Suzanne volunteered to make the signs. Maggie has some shutters that can be used. Please share any ideas you have for booth furniture or anything else to make this a success. More details to be worked out and shared!

Library Display
August is the month in which the guild's work will be displayed at the Asheville library. Start thinking about items you wish to loan for display. We estimate the maximum height is 10-12 inches at the back which would accommodate vases and other taller items. Items for display will need to be brought to the July meeting.

Fall Class
Tentatively, September 20-21 will be the two day work shop with Leigh Ross with her millennium cane technique A kit will also be offered which will provide the materials for the class. More info available later.

Slides/Professional Photographs
Edie shared her experience working the a photography student from Brevard and was very pleased with the results and the price. She will be glad to share his name and number if anyone in the area is interested. Checking with other local colleges that offer photography classes might be a good option for some of the rest of us to get some slides. (She contacted the professor who said he did not have time but recommended this student.)

Bead Board
Contributions are still welcome and needed for the bead board. (I will send out a separate note detailing what I currently have.)

Challenge and Show and Tell
Several brought items made with recycled items as well as some show and tell.

Challenge for June
Make sometime related to your pet.

Lasertran Show and Tell
Jan gave a quick demo using Lasertran Silk to make color transfers on clay. Quick and good results.

Buttons, Buttons, Who Has Buttons??
Marion has buttons, buttons, and more buttons. We were all amazed at the history of buttons we learned just a bit about and we drooled and oohed over the many beautiful antique buttons she brought to show us. She also brought some of polymer clay buttons to inspire us. Interesting, it was wanting to make buttons that brought Marion to our polymer clay guild. (Thank you buttons!) The program was wonderful and a special thank you to Marion. (Ok, how many of you have been on ebay looking at buttons??) Raise your hand!
Oh and one more thing - a reminder to make buttons and bring to the next meeting to show Marion.

If I have forgotten anything or anyone has anything else to add, please post it. It was a great meeting.
