Meeting Report

January 11, 2003

We had a good turnout for the January meeting at AB Tech. About a dozen of us welcomed new member Lynda Meckel and Maggie's friend Piper Long. We were happy to welcome back Kathy Wu after her summer job ended.

We discussed Werner Bonitz's suggestion that we use a professional photographer for getting pictures of our work that will show it to best advantage. We need to think about this: how many of us need or want professional pictures, how the cost will be coped with, etc. I will ask Werner if he can give us a couple of names of photographers we might contact.

We also discussed putting notices of meetings in as many publications as we can in an effort to recruit new members. Copy will be sent to Gail and to Karen for this purpose. Gail will cover Asheville, Kay --Hendersonville, Edie-Brevard & Waynesville, Karen--Lake Lure. Lynda suggested sending flyers to area rubber stamp shops. Irene offered to put together a flyer for us and Edie will make up copy for that. Maggie suggested we check with Treasurer Kay first to see if we can afford to have flyers printed.

Our scheduled panel discussion for February is shaping up to be a very interesting event. We have so many members with expertise about this, including Pat Pettyjohn (retail shows),Irene (wholesale), Jan (beads), Kathy Wu (alternative shows), Marilyn (consignment), Lynda (home parties), Byrd (teaching). And others not at the meeting whose expertise would be welcomed, like Pat Smith. Suzanne offered to be moderator for the discussion.

Maggie brought in a working draft of the tips she has put together so far for our tip pamphlet project. A few more ideas were added, but we could use lots more. If each person brought in one or two new tips for the next few meetings we would be close to having enough for a small pamphlet.Ideas could include tips, techniques, tools-hey, there's a title possibility!!

We then had our refrigerator magnetswap-these were this month's challenge -and there were some great solutions to the challenge, as always. Show and tell followed with lots of interesting things to see and talk about.

The January swap/sale followed. This is always anticipated and is a great way to either sell or swap work or unneeded supplies.

Irene set up a spot to photograph work for the newly- refurbished website. She is doing a splendid job and the website looks really professional. The members gallery will be a fine addition to the site.

Maggie's demo followed. She showed how those biodegradable, meltaway foam pellets can be used to make intricate beads. And then, before our eyes, turned a few tiny shaped pieces of flesh-colored clay into faces loaded with character!! Great job, Maggie!

February's challenge was decided on-it is to make something with a heart motif (not surprising for February).

Stay warm, everyone.
