MEETING REPORTS

September 14, 2002

The guild met on Saturday, September 14, at Earth Guild in Asheville. Maggie and Edie presided. Attendees were: Sue Dial and her guest Irene, Irene Dean, Edie, Maggie, Suzanne, Karen and her guest Evelyn, Marion, Gail, and Kay. Suzanne volunteered to write the meeting report.

MEETING PLACE
First, we discussed a new meeting place; we won't be able to meet at Earth Guild anymore. Edie had done a lot of research, and the two best options were Marion's church and an art classroom at AB Tech. A vote was taken, and the AB Tech location was approved. It's an art classroom, at least as large as the Earth Guild space, not far from the YWCA, and AB Tech will make a long-term commitment to our use of the room. (On rare occasions when they may need the room for something else, they'll find us an alternative location.) Parking is available nearby, but not immediately adjacent to the building. If anyone needs to load or unload something large or heavy, they can drive up to the door. The rent is $30 per session, only slightly more than Earth Guild but considerably higher than the YWCA.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Because our rent will be increasing (and just to meet new friends and have more fun), it was agreed that we'd like to increase our membership. About 30 active members would be ideal. Kay provided us with an updated membership list, showing current and past members. We agreed that from now on, each meeting report should include the names of those who attended. We also agreed that someone should contact members we haven't seen for a while. Marion was nominated as "hospitality chair" to contact former and inactive members, but I don't believe the issue was ever finalized. If someone would like to volunteer to do this, please let us know.

NEW "TIP OF THE MONTH"
Edie proposed a new feature to be introduced at our meetings. At each meeting we'll select a "tip of the month." These will be available only to those who attend the meetings and will be compiled in a pamphlet at the end of the year. It was suggested that we might be able to sell the pamphlet to raise money. The first tip of the month was supplied by Gail Jolley; it had to do with glow-in-the-dark clay. Be sure to jot down a good tip to share at the October meeting.

FUNDRAISING
Other ideas for raising money for the guild were discussed. If anyone knows of any shows the guild could be in, please let us know. We previously discussed having an auction; does anyone have any ideas about this?

DEMOS/WORKSHOPS
Suzanne is seeking volunteers for demos for 2003. February will be our marketing/merchandising panel discussion. The rest of the year is now available! Remember, you don't need to be Donna Kato--we're all friends and can learn a lot from each other. It would be helpful if you could suggest a specific month when you'll be able to attend.

Suzanne is also seeking names (and, if possible, e-mail addresses or websites) for teachers you'd like the guild to invite to offer a workshop. If you give her this information, she'll contact the people and find out what they propose to teach, how much they'd charge, and when they'll be available. Then we'll have some good information we can discuss and vote on. One suggestion is that we contact those scheduled to teach at Arrowmont and see if they'd like to combine their trip to TN with a trip to NC.

CHALLENGE
The challenge for September was to use twigs. This really stimulated some imaginative work! Thanks to Irene, you can see photos in the Challenges section of the guild website or by clicking here. In keeping with the "twig" theme, Edie showed us a miraculous sculpture from Japan that featured an elegant bird perfectly balanced by the very tip of its beak on a piece of bamboo. We were all amazed!

SHOW AND TELL
Irene showed us the jacket of her new book on polymer clay for kids. It's colorful and looks like a lot of fun (although much hard work for Irene)! Show and tell pics below.

DEMO
Suzanne demonstrated two mica-shift techniques--Donna Kato's nautilus and a "riveted" metallic cane she invented. She provided everyone with written instructions. Everyone worked along; we had fun and some great results!

OCTOBER MEETING
The October meeting will be in our new AB Tech location.

Sue Dial will be demonstrating her technique of using an extruder to make small multicolor beads. She makes terrific bracelets with these beads; you probably saw them at Grovewood or at our "show and tell."

Also, October is a sale/swap month. Bring your work, supplies, etc., to sell or swap. Please put a price tag on items you want to sell.

October's challenge is to make a toy or game. So not only can we look at them, but we can PLAY WITH THEM, too!

Kay brought her hollow lentil-shaped beads, one embellished with metallic thread under translucent clay, the others with translucent jellyroll canes.

Maggie brought an assortment of bracelets.

This tree trunk with a mysterious smile was made by Maggie.

Gail and Irene modeling their colorful new bracelets, made by Sue. We're all looking forward to learning how to make these beads in next month's demonstration.

Sue also brought the results of her experiments with Eraser Clay.
