Irene conducted the meeting.
NOMINATIONS FOR GUILD OFFICERS, 2002-03:
A vote was taken modifying the guild's policy on length-of-membership
requirements for guild officers. The new policy is that a member
must have belonged to the guild for six months to run for office
in the guild.
Candidates for office:
-- Maggie and Edie will be candidates for co-president.
-- Suzanne will run for demonstration coordinator.
-- Gail will seek re-election as librarian.
-- Kay will run for treasurer.
-- Kathy is a candidate for secretary.
-- Irene will continue to keep the website.
The elections will be held in February, and only dues-paying
members may vote.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Unsold ornaments and checks for sold items were returned from
Grovewood. Those who didn't attend the meeting can receive their
ornaments and checks in February.
The library has acquired Judith Skinner's
new video, "Precision Caning."
Irene announced that there wasn't enough
interest in Elise Winters' proposed classes to invite her to
teach. Maggie has continued to communicate with Carol Zilliacus
(polymer clay artist and past-president of the NPCG). She'll
be available to teach in the fall. It was generally agreed that
if the guild is to subsidize classes by a guest instructor, the
majority of members should agree on the proposed class(es) and
the subsidy should be only partial. Members should continue to
think about who they'd like to invite as an instructor.
Edie proposed that the guild should look
into opportunities for fund-raising. Suggestions included an
auction and/or a raffle. Funds would be used to subsidize classes
by guest instructors and field trips to galleries, museums, etc.
SUGGESTIONS FOR DEMOS:
The office of Demonstration Coordinator is newly created, comprising
some of the duties of the previous Vice President. Suggestions/volunteering
for demos is more than welcome! One suggested demo: Caning problem-shooting.
An expert cane-maker would demonstrate some basic techniques,
and members would bring in questions about caning and physical
examples of problems they've had with canes. The demonstrator
and other guild members could share suggestions for solutions.
WEBSITE:
Members are invited to submit photos on-line to Irene for inclusion
in a member gallery on the website. Images submitted must be
cropped and color-corrected (if necessary), and files must be
of a manageable size. Addendum: please don't send Irene any images
without first sending a separate email letting her know attachments
are on their way.
MONTHLY CHALLENGE:
-- January--Members shared the black-and-white items they made
in response to the January challenge. These included two stoppered
bottles, a selection of beads and buttons, earrings, a Japanese
"wrapped stone" pin or pendant, a bracelet, and an
adorable skunk. Suzanne took pictures of the challenge results.
Anyone who has a digital camera is encouraged to bring it to
the meetings to record future "challenge" pieces.
-- February--The challenge for February
will be to make a polymer clay hat (or some type of headgear),
or to use polymer clay to decorate/enhance an existing hat or
headgear. This should provide some great photo-ops!
-- Future--It was suggested that the challenge
for April be to share the "most unusual/surprising"
use of polymer clay. This ties in well with April Fool's Day.
Be thinking of a challenge for March.
CLAY DAY:
Members relaxed after accomplishing a lot of business by doing
some claying on a Valentine theme.
