Hello all, We welcomed new member Pat Pettyjohn from Tennessee. Pat brought some of her large luscious beads that were received with lots of oohs and aahs. Maggie brought some braided bracelets and cane-covered vessels, Pat S brought some tiny skunks, and Kathy showed us the results of her PMC class. Several people also brought their polymer postcards, every one of which seems to have made it through the hands of the postal service relatively unscathed. Then on to business: Several members met prior to the guild meeting to discuss the logistics of the craft show at the Grovewood Gallery Open House in July. With these enthusiatic volunteers, I'm sure our guild's first public showing will be successful and fun! I'll make a separate post with the details. Some discussion ensued about procuring items for the guild library. Both Sara Jane and Gail reported few responses to their requests for suggestions for video and book purchases. Remember that this is your guild and your library, being financed with your money, so please! make some suggestions. Check the message archives for the list of videos that Sara Jane posted, and the list of books that Gail posted. Also, please give an opinion on how much you think we ought to spend on library materials. A deadline of May 26 (two weeks after yesterday's meeting) was set for everyone who wants to voice their opinions, and orders will be placed shortly thereafter. Email Gail or Sara Jane privately, or make your suggestions to the list, but either way, make your opinion known. All opinions count (but only if received by May 26!). More library matters - Pat P stated that she has a couple of videos to donate to the library, and we discussed members loaning their videos to the guild library so that other members could rent them and some money could be generated for the guild. If you have videos (or books) to loan or donate to the guild, let Gail know by the May 26 deadline for library opinions, so that none of the donated/loaned materials are duplicated in an order. Sara Jane will check with Lapidary Journal and Jewelry Crafts to see if they offer discounted or free subscriptions to guild libraries. Irene will check with Bead & Button, Somerset Studio, and Belle Armoire magazines. Pat S brought up the Member List. Members present agreed that it would be a nice idea if each guild member had a listing of contact info and birthday of all other guild members. This list will be for paid-up guild members only, and will not be made public. If you ~do~ want your info to be included in this list, please email Pat with your address, phone number, and birthday (no year necessary :) so she can compile and distribute a list. Remember the logo contest deadline is coming up soon - June 2! We could really use some more submissions so we have a variety to choose from. Another request was made, by Sara Jane, that all members think about what teachers you would like our guild to host. There are a lot of talented teachers in polymer clay, and we'll try to get a list of them posted soon. Demos were scheduled for the next few months - and what a great line-up we have! Mark your calendars and don't miss these meetings:
Finally, after more business than we thought there would be, we got to Sara Jane's demonstration of lamps and night lights. Wow! was my reaction when I saw the size and detail of these functional beauties. Her two tabletop nightlights had removeable domed tops; both were celestial themed, monogrammed, and one included an orca whale. The lamp was a wide cylinder with a mountains-to-the-sea, day-to-night scene encircling it. All lamps were made with a lot of translucent polymer clay, accented with blues and golds, and had a lovely glow from within. Unfortunately it wasn't dark enough in the meeting room to capture the full effect. Sara Jane did her usual excellent job of detailing the do's and don't's to consider when assembling the electrical components of lamps and lights. She also shared her experience with the assembly of the polymer parts of these pieces, relating successes and errors and plenty of tips. I know I was furiously scribbling notes and diagrams, and I hope I can try my hand at one of these before long. Thanks, Sara Jane, for showing us a delightful way to show off polymer clay's versatility. That wraps it up - an enjoyable meeting and over too quickly. :) submitted by Irene Semanchuk Dean, May 13 2001 |
