We were a small group for this month's meeting, and Gail sat in for Irene to conduct the business portion of the meeting. Gail announced the list of seven books she will order for our library. She also declared Irene to be the official winner of the logo contest with her handsome view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This logo will be perfect for our banner too. Kathy passed around some sample flyers she created for the Grovewood show. She had a black and white version and a color version and asked for our input on them. We all thought she did a fine job, made some minor suggestions and tried to get some estimate of how many we would need. Kathy is also handling the demo schedule for show day, and she says the day is pretty well covered with about five to eight people agreeing to demonstrate. We discussed the tax number question and Kathy will do a separate posting about that. Maggie came through with receipt books for the show. She got them for seven cents each! What a shopper!!! Maggie will also get bags for the show and we discussed sizes and quantities we would need. It has been agreed that those who need boxes for their work will bring their own. We welcomed prospective member Isabel Taylor from Weaverville. Isabel has a background in clay and art and we hope that she will join us. After this business was concluded Kathy Wu took over the meeting with her demo "Soldering On A Shoestring". She first discussed the tools used in soldering: different kinds of torches, solder pick, a surface to solder on, and the various kinds of solders and fluxes. She showed how she makes an oval bezel for setting a stone, shaping it over an oval ring mandrel, and how, in a few seconds, she solders a jump ring with a perfect barely visible join. Kathy has just completed a Precious Metals Clay certification course and she brought in several completed pieces she made at the class, and discussed this amazing material and how it is used and fired. This was Kathy's second silversmithing demo and we are all fortunate to have have the benefit of her expertise. She was deluged with questions from us all, which she answered most graciously and patiently. Thanks, Kathy for an excellent, worthwhile demo. Our apologies to Byrd, who requested
that we do nothing interesting in her absence. We tried to comply
with your request,Byrd, but doggone it,this was one WAS interesting.
